History · 1920–1921

How the post began

On March 10, 1920, a meeting of ex-service men of St. Peters and vicinity was called by Oscar Schulte and Geo. Stiefvater and held in All Saints Hall, St. Peters, Missouri. The meeting was called to order by Geo. Stiefvater, after which O. D. Algermissen was elected chairman. Speeches were made by O. D. Algermissen, Oscar Schulte, and Geo. Stiefvater. Attendance numbered 64, including ex-service men from St. Peters, O’Fallon, St. Paul, Dardenne, Peruque, Cottleville, Harvester, and St. Charles.

After a lengthy discussion, a post of the American Legion was formed to be known as the Aloys Crockwell Post, later numbered 313, Department of Missouri, on the Preamble of the American Legion. At this meeting it was voted that annual dues should be $2.00 per member, with 50 cents remaining in the post treasury.

On April 5, 1920, remittance was made to the State Department Adjutant for the state and national per capita tax, with an application for a charter. On May 7, 1920, the charter was received from National Headquarters of the American Legion at Indianapolis, Indiana. On May 14, 1920, members met in the K. of C. Hall in St. Peters and elected Geo. Stiefvater Post Commander, Dan Schneider Vice Post Commander, and Oscar Schulte Adjutant.
